If you stay in Thailand for more than a few weeks, having a local Thai bank account can offer a lot of benefits and certainly it's cheaper to use a local ATM card than withdrawing money with your international ATM.

Benefits of having a Thai bank account

The benefits of having a local Thai bank account are many and depend on your situation:

  • You can use a local ATM card, allowing you to withdraw money from your account for free at a very extensive network of ATMs all over the country and pay at shops without hassle (there can be very minor fees when you withdraw in other provinces).
Typical ATM withdrawal fees for foreign ATM cards are nowadays about THB 200 per withdrawal (maximum withdrawal amount per ATM transaction is about THB 20,000-30,000 depending on the bank).

  • Enjoy credit card facility to book airline tickets online and make (online) purchases without currency conversion fees. If you make (online) payments in Thailand using a foreign credit card there are always exchange rate charges which can be significant.

  • You can easily transfer funds into Thailand using conventional payment channels such as banks, but also using modern and often cheaper online payment channels such as Paypal, TransferWise or Dollar Smart after you connect them to your local Thai bank account. This saves you costs and makes things easier.

  • In order to transfer funds out of Thailand you need a local bank account as well as papers proving the source of the funds. If you have problems wiring funds out of Thailand, contact us for alternative wiring solutions.

  • You can open a Foreign Currency account, which allows you to receive for example USD into your account and keep them there until you decide the exchange rate is good enough to convert them into THB.

  • You can use online internet banking, allowing you to manage your account from anywhere, even if you're not in Thailand. You can also use the online banking app on your smartphone.

  • If you want to buy a property in Thailand, you need to have a bank account in your own name.

  • If you want to apply for a Retirement Visa, you need to hold THB 800,000 into an account in Thailand.

  • Other standard banking services are available such as: investment products, insurance products, mutual funds, deposits, saving accounts, etc.

How to open a local bank account in Chiang Mai

Unfortunately, new regulations do not allow foreigners on a tourist visa to open a bank account. You need a 1 year (non-immigrant) visa.

Further, it depends on your personal situation and additional papers. Also, even with the same rules and requirements, there are differences in actual practices amongst branches of the same bank. With our services and connections we can guarantee the opening of an account to you in one of Thailand's largest banks. We will select the bank that suits your needs most.

We can help you:

  • to get a local bank account
  • to get an ATM card
  • to get online internet banking
  • to get a credit card facility
  • tourist visa accepted
  • full assistance and translation
  • 100% success rate

Fees & charges:

  • THB 800 only for our full assistance service including translation and guarantee
  • THB 500 for a Residence Certificate (not necessary for all foreigers, depends on your visa type)
  • THB 300 if you wish to have an ATM card (recommended)

@James: If you stay in a guesthouse most likely you won’t get a proof of residence, without it, you won’t be able to open a bank account.

RE: OPEN A BANK ACCOUNT: I will be in Chiang Mai just a few days less than 3 months on a 90-Day/Single Entry Tourist Visa. I may or may not stay at the same place, more likely a guesthouse rather than a condo. Is it still possible to get a Proof of Residence in order to open a bank account? Are you able to help me open a bank account if I cannot the Proof of Residence? Thank you.
