That’s in fact not such an alien idea, Thailand has had a long history of polygamy often when a man takes one official wife and a few minor wives (mia noi). But even in very recent history and until now, if you mix well with locals you will hear many real-life stories of guys who (have been) married several wifes in different places all over Thailand at the same time.

In the past it was more easy for a Thai guy to get married to a woman in one village and the next day travel up to another village to get married to another woman, as the registration system of the government wasn’t very update. But even today, the systems of the government aren’t really state-of-the-art so chances are you go unnoticed when marrying two different women in different provinces. A safer bet would be if you marry to a girl in a traditional way without officially registering, then only social networks like Facebook will betray you.
Interestingly, Thai law has provisions for these apparently common cases, and stipulates that only the first wife has full rights. So there you go again: first wife and then minor wives, a clear heritage from the past.
An interesting case happened recently when a guy in Samut Songkram, Mr. Wichai Tao, married two twin girls. He said he just couldn’t make up his mind which one he liked more, both girls liked him since childhood and so they decided to get married together. The good thing about Thailand is: this is all legal!
Muslims have discovered the benefits of polygamy a long time ago and let’s admit it: there’s ancient wisdom behind it. In many islamic countries it’s legal to be married to several women at the same time, but the rules and relations amongst the women vary.
If you feel you’re not entirely satisfied with one relationship in Thailand, consider having an affair (whether agreed upon with your partner or not), and if it works out, consider having more than one relationship at the same time. For guys looking for a deeper connection, it can be a simple necessity to have two or more girls to get something near a wholesome experience in this country.
If you decide to go ahead, it’ll surely require some deep sea talking if you want to be honest or skillful secret manoeuvring if you don’t, but others have gone before you so you’re not alone in going for multiple women in your life.
