While there are several hundreds of temples in and around Chiang Mai, here are the most interesting ones to visit.
Remember to dress modestly, cover shoulders and knees and take off your shoes before entering the temple itself.
one of the oldest temples in the heart of town, with ancient ruins
This is probably the most unusual and interesting temple in the city. It's built partly in the ground with tunnels, and with a lovely little park around it. It's located in a soi off Suthep road near CMU. In the park, monks hang phrases and proverbs to reflect on.
One of the largest and main temple complexes in town, right at the west end of the Sunday market street. 'Phra Singh' stands for the 'lion buddha', and there is an image of it inside the complex. Buildings inside the complex are mainly Lanna style.
Located on Suthep road, this is a rather large temple with Sukothai / Lanna style buildings. According to the legend, a Buddhist relic that was stored here duplicated itself. A Buddhist university is located on the premises, and there is a monk chat for foreigners.
It's a very old temple with 7 main stupas (Jet Yod).
Probably the most outstanding temple, because it's overlooking the city from the mountain Doi Suthep. There are many songtaews driving up the mountain to lead you there, but the last part, ideally, you should to do by walking up 306 stairs. Alledgedly there are remains of the Buddha and some Buddhist monks from all kinds of countries travel here to visit the temple.
On a clear day, you can get a nice view over the city, but otherwise you'll witness a layer of smog that often covers Chiang Mai.
