Online dating in Thailand really has taken a flight in the past decade. Was it for Thai women in the past perhaps something to be ashamed of or to tell only your closest friends, nowadays online dating has become very accepted as a social phenomenon or perhaps even as a social activity as most Thai girls like to chat their time away.
Technology has in fact blurred the borders between online dating and online chatting: for example, you can use several smartphone applications to approach a total stranger digitally and thus chatting can seamlessly go over into dating. There are many social network applications on smartphone that work with your GPS location and help you to find others in the vicinity, so if you say 'hi' to a girl 500 meters away and you both take off from there you're in fact already online dating.
Moreover nowadays, nearly every girl in Thailand, no matter how rich or poor, has a smartphone and just loves to chat, and the online approach is something that suits Thai culture much more than a direct approach like saying 'hi' to a cute girl in a mall because Thai culture isn't that direct. Online chatting is kind of anonymous, you can delete or block a contact at any time, so it feels fairly safe to most Thai girls.
Many Thai girls haven't got much to do or have a lot of spare time to chat, so online chatting and dating is something that helps them to kill time.
If you master your pick up skills in daily life (or what some call your day game), approaching a regular girl in the wild can be quite exciting and successful, but I know this is not for everyone, it also depends on your character, your creativity and your guts.
So overall, online dating is one of the most efficient ways to find a new Thai girl, whether that be for something serious or just for a fling.
Most online dating sites work in similar ways in that you can use them for free only to some extent but without real message capability. Typically, the free operating space includes browsing members, sending her a wink or otherwise showing your interest for a certain girl, but that's about it.
As soon as you wish to exchange real messages (contacting her, reading her messages and so on), you need to upgrade to a paid membership. So at some stage, you're facing the question to pay or not to pay (interestingly, this question keeps coming back during later phases of the dating process, but I'll tell you more about that later).
There are exceptions, for example when you can only message one girl every ten minutes, in that case you could call it in essence a free dating site because you can in principle contact every girl you see there.
Now, you’re planning to date a girl in Thailand, not in Europe, so don’t expect the girl will pay a lot of money for a membership to talk to guys, no it’s you who has to pull out your creditcard.
If you ask me, I prefer to stay within the free functionality of a few sites, but that's because 1. I'm not so serious (anymore) with Thai girls, 2. because I speak, read and write Thai, 3. because I'm already in Thailand and 4. because I've found venues and developed ways to make the online dating process work efficiently for me, without loosing too much time. (Most Insiders would agree with me that it's not necessary to pay (too much) for online dating sites.)
If you don't comply with these four criteria, you could benefit a lot from the paid functionality of dating sites, because it can get you higher in the search, because you'll attract the more serious candidates for a long-term relationship or marriage, because you're not there when they are hot to see you and because some sites give you more assistance, for example even help you to translate messages.
One way or another, you always pay in Thailand: you pay for a girl, you pay for a membership with an online dating site or with me, you pay with your time to learn the tricks or you pay with your frustration when you wasted your time and effort on the wrong girl.
There's no free lunch and so there's nothing wrong with paying to make things work more efficiently for you.
One consideration to stay with the free sites, if you're like me, is that on average they tend to perhaps attract some more girls who are in for something less serious while the paid sites attract more girls which are very serious or looking for marriage only, but that doesn't apply to all girls.
A great number of online dating sites are more or less international in that they have members from all over the world or all over Asia. The benefit of such sites is that they can often afford to invest in a very smooth functionality but being international does have some downsides, especially in that they are less adapted to local circumstances.
An example is that international sites usually don't create a transgender option in the profile registration. As a consequence, ladyboys choose to register as a girl and that will create some less pure search results and possibly waste of time for us straight guys. Some ladyboys purposefully post unclear pictures and don't tell you that they aren't made of the real stuff, so these girlguys will be wasting a lot of your time, what I call noise in the search results that you should filter out as soon as possible.

If the site is good enough, you can block these guys from appearing in your search results.
If you're an international traveller planning to do a few Asian countries in a few months and you're too lazy to upload your profile and pictures to several local sites then such international sites can be very useful as you just alter your location and you find your new woman in a new port.
If, on the contrary, you're mainly based in Thailand the purely local sites that focus on Thai girls only do have some advantages.
So anyway, here's my best pick of online dating sites in Thailand for all you guys (Premium members: just scroll down, there are some good Thai dating sites and more tricks in the Insider section).
Thai friendly has grown from a starting dating site to one of Thailand’s largest in just a few years.
What I like most about this site is that it’s completely specialised on Thailand, it’s not just a mere copy from international templates. This brings with it that there is a good emphasis on pictures as compared to profile content (because that really matters less in Thailand) and that you won’t receive any messages from girls in the Philippines, for example.
The menu is simple with easy to watch pictures, the layout is pleasant, and it has a large number of girls in nearly every city in Thailand. I’ve noticed, for example, that there are a lot of pretty members located in provincial cities such as Khon Kaen, but that could be a coincident or it’s just because local features make Khon Kaen women gorgeous.
Overall, this is one of my favourite dating sites when I’m roaming the realms of Thai girls looking for farang, because most girls here are really into farang. Some Thai sites work even better but for that you have to be able to read and write Thai.
Thai friendly attracts girls from all kinds of backgrounds: regular girls, serious girls, and also some girls from the male entertainment industry (massage shops and a few freelancers) though not too many. In general, there is not disturbance here from ladyboys and ‘working girls’ as you find on other sites, because the site is well managed and well-structured to keep most of them out.
The good thing about this site is that you can use it completely for free if you can manage to message a girl no more frequent than every ten minutes. So drop them a message, wait a while until they reply, ask for their ID LINE and get off the dating site grid to talk directly to whichever girl is interested in you.
As the name indicates, this dating site is focused on on Asian countries. There are a huge number of members online, and quite a lot of them are in Thailand.
The simple menu, good functionality and emphasis on pictures is what makes this site very easy to work with. A great plus furthermore is that this site basically entirely free: you can send a message to a girl you like and if she replies just get her contact details and go off the dating site's grid. There is no time limit, simply unlimited messaging with anyone that catches your eye. I can't even discover a paid membership option on this site, so I guess the site is designed to be entirely free while it gets its money from some other source.
The Thai girls on this site aren't really that active in comparison to the Phillippina girls, but that only gets you distracted and your inbox gets cluttered with irrelevant interests (unless you really want to go there).
Thai Cupid is part of the huge international dating network of Cupid Media with a presence in an impressive list of countries. In Thailand, Thai Cupid took over the popular dating site Thai Love Links a few years ago, that’s why you still see some girl’s pictures with the Thai Love Links watermark on them.
Thai Cupid’s huge international presence is in fact both its strength and its weakness: due to its size, basically everything works fine and the whole concept has been thought through, although overall I actually don't like the old-fashioned layout, the functionality and the (slow) picture gallery show. But its weakness is that the format of the site is so detailed and universal that it doesn’t always fit perfectly with the local situation in a certain country.
For example, when you fill out your profile you could waste a lot of time clicking all the boxes that are supposed to tell your profile visitors about your personality, interests and so on, but in Thailand that simply doesn’t really matter because Thai girls are generally much more superficial than Western ones and so they would only look at your pictures and a few slogans you put in your profile. That you love poetry and that your favourite movie is Fight Club has no added value whatsoever for the average Thai girl browsing over your profile.
(Having said that, you don’t need to fill out all these details and you could skip part 2 of the questionnaire rather quickly go over to browse female members, so technically it’s not necessary to being dragged into wasting time, but practically the layout of the site is more designed for the interested and more educated Western girl who wants to know that you both have a magical click because of this one special movie (Amelie), while for Thai girls it really doesn’t matter.)
Strong points about this site is that it’s quite active with real (not fake) members: minutes after signing up I’m already receiving messages from female members, while I count a fairly large number of girls online (mid day) and also quite a lot in my area (Chiang Mai). Overall, though you get messages from girls all over Thailand and that doesn't really fit with an efficient online dating strategy, if you have one.
What I don't like is that girls can select to contact you from a series of templates with standard sentences, so in the beginning you don't know how good her English is and besides that, it feels a bit fake.
My impression is that the girls you find here are not top models, mostly rather average-looking Thai girls from every corner of the country, but they are serious to make contact. When Thai Love Links was still around, it attracted more serious girls and most of my friends reported a high success rate.
The price to join as a paid member isn’t too bad, starts at a little over 10 euro a month (for a 1-year membership), so if you don’t mind to pay for online dating, this site probably has something to offer.
Other advantages of the Cupid system are that you could easily move yourself to a new location with your current profile and start dating there. Or you could search for Thai girls in London, for example. It’s all there, the menu is extensive and it has (perhaps too) many options.
(A surprising minor technical mistake that this site overlooked is that there is no verification email. You basically register and you’re on. This means that someone else could register with his username and password but with your email address, which you’ll probably notice fast enough, but then in principle that’s not what you want.)
Thai Love Lines is another rather active dating site that can get you some nice Thai ladies quickly. I registered as a trial and got a stunning 23 emails in my inbox just one or two days later. Admitted, I'm more than average handsome 
, but still any decent looking foreigner should be able to get a date here soon.
As I didn't pay for a membership, I can't see what these girls emailed me, but I could see their pictures and the audience here isn't much different from other dating sites: some average girls or too old ones, and some cuties.
No nuisance from ladyboys or prostitutes so far, and that's because this site is entirely Thai, the office is located in Thailand and staffed by Thai, which means they can adapt better to the local challenges.
Technically, at first this site appears to be based on a standard (international) template, but at a second glance it's probably not, anyways it's extremely poor designed with poor user friendliness, which means you've got to click too many times to go through all your messages, for instance. There are no red number flags indicating you've got something new to check etc. etc. so clearly this site needs a complete technical overhaul to get near state-of-the-art design.
The poor technical design and lack of user friendliness wouldn't hurt your results, though, as there are plenty of women on this site but without a paid membership you can't do an advanced search by location, so I couldn't check how many girls are online in Chiang Mai right now, for example.
Surprisingliy, the number of active users at one moment appears to be only 130 people so that's actually very low compared to the number of messages that I got in my Inbox, which would suggest people just go online for a short while to check their inbox and then go offline again. Perhaps the poor technical layout of the site explains this behaviour.
Thaimatch.com is a relatively newcomer in the world of Thai dating apps, but it has gained proper speed and shows an impressive amount of Thai singles in any area. Technically perhaps not as smooth as the state-of-the-art international dating apps, it works good enough and the makers understand the annoyance of seeing and being seen by ladyboys for straight guys, so you can easily switch them off.
With fair pricing and similar features as its competitor Thaifriendly for members and non-members, Thaimatch is one of the dating apps you should try when you're on a serious hunt.
As the name indicates, Asian Dating specialises in girls from all over Asia. If you’re a traveller to Southeast Asia, this is great because you upload your profile one time, date a local girl in Thailand and move your focus again when you move to a new city. A girl in each port, so to say.
If you’re planning to stay in Thailand long-term, I find this concept much less interesting.
The registration and menu make me feel like a deja-vu: have I been here before? This is because it’s owned by CupidMedia again, the same company that owns Thai Cupid.
Considering the numbers of members in Thailand, only 94 in entire Thailand, this is no match for the bigger sites that focus on Thailand only.
Truly Thai is a relatively new dating site that tries to make its way up. The functionality and layout are quite good and the menu is user friendly, again you can’t do much without a paid membership, you can only show interest in the girl but there is no message capability on both sites unless someone pays.
The rates for a membership are reasonable for a big site, but a bit expensive for a beginning online dating site, I’d say, because there aren’t as many members yet as on the big sites. Good point here though is that you can try it for a week with a 30-day money back guarantee.
The main disadvantage of Truly Thai is that it probably still have a lot of fake profiles to lure you in. Clearly, every beginning online dating website has to 'fake it until they make it', but the number of fake messages and luring profiles seems quite obvious: all too perfect English, deliberate spelling mistakes but not in a way Thai would do that, model-like pictures of girls who are keen to meet you, and so on.
It's a pity that many girls on this site feel so fake, because actually I quite like the functionality so if there were more serious girls in my neighbourhood, Truly Thai could be much better than all standard templates of CupidMedia.

The good thing about Thai Kisses is that it’s entirely focused on the Thai market, so the questionnaire is a bit smarter than standard and caters more for what is relevant for the Thai context, rather than asking you to fill out all kinds of unnecessary details that no girl cares about.
At the same time, there is some info summarized in the profile that I’m sure no average Thai girl can understand.

The number of ladies in Thailand and in Chiang Mai is fairly okay, so you could give it a try.
The membership price starts at EUR 12.50 which is fairly reasonable.
Relatively new, but fairly active is this site with a growing number of girls in all places in Thailand. Not as big as the top sites but definitely worth giving a try if you have your dating info ready anyway.
Some foreigners recommend Facebook for dating but they probably don’t know what they are talking about because Facebook is really the last platform you want to use for dating. Yes, nearly every girl in Thailand has a Facebook account, in fact it’s said that Thailand or Bangkok has the highest "Facebook density" in the world (!), but that doesn’t mean Facebook is good for dating or chatting with girls.
The main problem about Facebook is its lack of privacy. If you didn’t pay attention to your privacy settings, girls you’re chatting with can see what other girls are in your friends list, who you are with in that intimate photo, and what other girls like or comment what you just posted there.
I’ve had to answer many questions to prospective dates about why there were so many girls in my friends list, who was that girl who just liked my picture and so on. Thai girls’ nature is curious when it comes to relationships, so girls can even find out that they are dating the same guy.
Facebook’s privacy settings are so complex and hidden, that you have to study hard to get to change all of them, and its standard default settings are probably already breaching more of your privacy than you would want to allow for if you knew. Scammers know how to get behind them and find your list of friends and posts, even if you thought you blocked that.
Adding random cute Thai girls to your list of friends based on Facebook’s suggestions is utterly useless, you don’t even know if the girls are interested in dating you even if they chat with you, because they have nothing else to do. Some girls have thousands of 'friends', and just get a kick of getting as many likes as possible on them posting yet another selfie, most likely you won’t get anything out of it.
Within Facebook, there are some pages on dating but I also find them useless, although you could be lucky to meet a girl there.
In any case, never use Facebook for chatting, just say you don’t have Facebook, and take the girl off the grid to LINE or another smartphone app that is more private.
Badoo is another worldwide dating system, which you can use it wherever you go.
Thai girls use it too, in all places. The good thing is that this site has a smartphone app and you can easily see who's near to try to make contact.
Easy menu, many girls everywhere, get their Line ID and get of the Badoo grid.
The girls here tend to be a bit less willing to meet than on a real dating side, perhaps because it also feels like a friends' site and because they use it on their smartphone to kill time, not to really meet.
Another serious downside of this site is that there are so many ladyboys and they don't always reveal their true nature so you'll be wasting some time on them. This is because it's an international system that is designed to work everywhere and the makers didn’t realise there are so many transgenders or in between in Thailand, so there is no option for them to click that when they fill out their profile.
Beetalk is an smartphone application for chatting with friends and dates in the vicinity, again using the GPS funtion of the smartphone.
Is it any different from other apps? Well, not really. It works fast and smooth and it does attract mainly a young crowd, but other than that I never heard any of my mates dating a Beetalk girl, even though the bees do create something like an amosphere of ‘let me talk to you about the birds and the bees’ kind of atmosphere.
Like other apps, Beetalk reads your address book so suggests new Beetle members to you that are already known to you, so that could create something like a mix up between your real friends or candidates for dating.
In the past few years, Tinder has become a household name in the world of dating and it's still setting the standards for dating apps worldwide. Technically superior in most aspects, funded and owned by Big Money (actually the same company that also owns Match.com, Meetic, OkCupid, PlentyOfFish and so on), it's simply too big to ignore.
PLUSES
Technically, Tinder works great: it's very smooth, user-friendly, modern and has many functions built-in. The internal algorithm seamlessly keeps proposing new girls in the neighbourhood. Also, a vast number of Thai girls know the app and have uploaded their profile, so you can literally keep swiping until you get a Tinder thumb.
So Tinder is the elephant in the room when you're looking for cockroaches and other uninvited animals. That said, it's definitely not my favourite.
MINUSES
The most annoying thing about Tinder is the vast number of ladyboys, 'working girls' or freelancers and Chinese scammers.
Because Tinder is centrally managed from a large back office in the US, it don't have a real foot on the ground in Thailand to understand how the situation here is different from most places in the world. One thing which is different is that we've got a LOT of ladyboys here and they are not what you want to see as a straight guy. While local dating sites such as Thaifriendly have understood that perfectly and have made special categories for guys looking for transgenders and vice versa, Tinder hasn't so you can be wasting quite some time on gorgeous looking girls who after all are just shemales. This is because many shemales are simply hiding their sexual nature until you're talking for a few days or even until you're in her room!
Tinder either consciously allows transgenders to post their profile publicly (and doesn't filter for the words 'transgender' or 'ladybody') out of political correctness to the LGBT community and at the cost of the common straight guy, or it's simply not aware of the vast number of kratoeys down here.
Besides that, a growing number of scammers pollute the app's population. These are mostly Chinese scammers who try to lure you into investing into some online investing or gambling site, but I think it'll be just a matter of time until we will get the rougher West-African and Philippino gangs in who engage in plain criminal stuff such as extortion.
Because Tinder allows members to select their worldwide location, this has opened the door for the full-time scammers. It's an utterly useless feature to know who's dating in Singapore while you're here in Thailand, unless you're about to go there in a week's time and your stay is limited.
Finally, 'working girls' or freelancers are great if that's what you're looking for, but they can be annoying if you're looking for a real date.
Even though it's very obvious from their profile - ladyboys often even write that in their profile and Chinese scammers are easily recognizable too when you've seen a few, Tinder does absolutely not enough to stop it and that's because they're too busy begging you for more money.
Another problem about Tinder is that the app is centered about swiping people away, rather than really looking at a profile. Swiping left (= unlike) versus swiping right (= like) almost has become a household concept too in dating terms. In fact, when you're on Tinder, you'll be swiping left so many times that Tinder is selling the possibility to undo a wrong swipe in its premium packages. Apparently, people are so busy swiping candidates rapidly down the drain that sometimes we'd like to undo that action because perhaps there was something in the picture that you may have overlooked.
So Tinder basically conditions your mind into swiping people away and thereby limits your imagination in the dating process. And when you're so much in a hurry to delete girls from your sight that sometimes you think you made a mistake and want to go back, you got to ask yourself what you're really doing.
What I also don't like about Tinder is that even after you purchase the most expensive Gold package, you still can't do everything and the app still continues to ask for more money, for example to superlike someone after your quota has been used or to appear on top. So it's quite a greedy app, you never stop paying.

For all these reasons, I call Tinder the Toilet App. In fact, it's an ideal activity for when you're having a dump: with one hand you wipe your ass, with the other you swipe away the girls. In the early days, around 2014 or so, I reached the end of available girls in Chiang Mai after swiping for about 2 weeks, but now I've been shitting on the toilet for 2 months and I still didn't reach the end, so in the end it's an app you can't really do without, despite its disadvantages.

WeChat is a Chinese smartphone application most likely financed and owned by the Chinese government although I don’t have hard facts for that. Like so many other smartphone applications, you can use this to chat with others and it also has the GPS who is near facility, so you can see what girls are in your neighbourhood and start dating with her online.
WeChat tends to attract A LOT of working girls: prostitutes, ladyboys, freelancers and so on, wherever you go, not only in Thailand, so this is a real noise disturbance that prevents you from really finding a decent date.
Beside that, WeChat has even more serious privacy issues than Facebook that most people are unaware of, even the ones who use it as an alternative to Whatsapp for normal day-to-day communication with friends and colleagues.
I had serious trouble to delete this terrible app from my smartphone and it took me several resets and configurations to erase all trails of it. This app doesn’t want you to stop using it and I seriously suspect they are using it to spy on business people as a covert way of industrial espionage.
WeChat does not allow for cancellation of account
The app works rather slow and is not so smooth (perhaps there is a time delay due to Chinese censoring??), Chinese apps still don’t compete on a world class level. On the positive side, it has a desktop version which works synchronous with the smartphone app, which is a plus over Whatsapp, but that’s about all good I have to say about this app.
Overall, just stay away from WeChat unless you want to source freelancers and prostitutes.

There are some success stories most most of it involves a lot of work and very hit and miss.
