One of Chiang Mai’s best Italian restaurants.
FOOD REVIEW BY JIMMY
Delicate Italian right off Taphae Gate
Cuisine: Italian
Rating: ★★★★★
Recommended dishes: pizza, pasta vongole, black ink pasta
Price indication: reasonable; average meal about THB 200-300 / person
Open: every day
Location: Rachadamnoen street (Sunday market street), just off Taphae gate; coming from Taphae gate, just walk into the Sunday market street, it's 50m on your left.
La Lanterna di Genova is one of Chiang Mai's most overlooked Italian restaurants. Located right off Taphae Gate, a few steps into the so-called Sunday Market street, it's a cozy little Italian with some great food. What I like most about this place is the pasta vongole (pasta with clams), which is the best in the entire city, as well as the thin and nice pizza crust. I had exactly the same dish, spaghetti vongole in formerly Pum Pui (now closed) and in Why Not, and definitely Genova wins: the taste is delicate with natural ingredients, well balanced.
Unlike some other Italians, where the sauce can be very rich or they add Knorr / Maggi in the food, Genova offers natural home made food.
The pasta isn't really al dente, which I like, but the taste is good.
The kitchen can be a bit slow, but it's worth the wait.
Thin crusty pizza with good quality ham
Tomato based pasta
Pasta vongole
Grilled veggies
