What does it take to produce great
photographs?
Award-winning travel and documentary
photographer Alan McArthur takes you
through the process, leading 1,2 and 3 days
cultural and photographic workshops out and about in Chiang Mai.
The focus of the workshops is getting
to know your camera better, increasing
awareness of your subject, and its
environment, working with and around
light, choosing perspective and working
depths of field.
A typical day starts at 8 am when we meet
at Wat Phra Singh, a Buddhist teaching
temple in the heart of the old city, for a
morning spectacle of the young novice
monks gathering for assembly. Then, its
on to a local fresh produce market.
Afterwards we head to a unique forest
temple and its strange cemetery of
abandoned Buddhist statues.
Lunch is at 12.30. This is a chance to ask
questions, and discuss what has been
learnt so far.
In the afternoon, we focus on portraiture,
with a choice of locations and models.
This can discussed at lunch and tailored to
your tastes.
Numbers are kept small, with usually
no more than 5. The itinerary can be
discussed the evening before.
Visits to any of the temples come with an
introduction to Buddhist art history.
Chiang Mai has a rich art culture. If
you are interested in visiting galleries,
attending lectures, or visiting art markets,
please ask, and this can be included in the
itinerary.
